BuildDX

A portfolio feature to onboard smart buildings faster.

Switch Automation is a data layer for net zero buildings. This company has found how to make a global environmental impact through the digital transformation of real estate.

Opportunity

On-boarding buildings faster by importing site and integrations data, tagging equipment, and creating devices and readings on bulk actions.

How might we improve Switch client’s experience, by bringing buildings on the Switch Platform faster, and make them understand the value of Switch Automation in the first days?

Goals
  • Introduce a portfolio view
  • Implement logic in bulk to streamline the process
  • Look up and apply repeatable scripts to multiple sites
  • Streamline the integration workflow
  • Bulk update Switch hardware (gateway) virtually
Pain Points

Through research and user testing we identified a few challenges:

  1. Large amount of data points and records makes it challenging to handle on a UI
  2. Building engineers and partners need to exit the Platform to currently do their jobs
  3. There is no standard way to tag and label equipment & devices
Solution
  1. Utilisation of a javaScript grid component (AG-Grid) that allows scaling, fast search and filtering and works with all major frameworks
  2. Service side filtering to allow faster results
  3. Asynchronous operations made easier to track by illustrating the progress in the UI
  4. Portfolio schedules and logic reprocessing facilitated in one click
  5. Develop a naming convention to integrate with existing best-in-class conventions and unlock value from the vast quality of data being generated by smart devices and equipment
TAKE AWAY | Technical specs are essential for software engineers, and come hand-in-hand with UX specs. New feature request prior release of MVP should not be considered to avoid infinite iterations and move further away from phase 1 completion.
